Ally comes face to face with Larry’s past, which could tear them apart just in time for Christmas. Nelle asks Cage for help with a case. The office holiday party lives up to the hype.

Nelle comes to Cage with a dilemma. Her father, Henderson, has been fired from his teaching job for believing he is Santa Claus. Nelle is helping him sue for wrongful termination and needs Cage’s help. Cage takes one look at Henderson, who is wearing a Santa suit, and agrees to help.

At the staff meeting, Fish reminds everyone of that night’s Christmas party. He also announces that no one can sing unless they’re pre-approved. This is to avoid the Ally debacle of last year. (Who can forget Ally’s sultry “Santa Baby” number?) Nelle’s father arrives for his court appearance still wearing the Santa suit. Cage persuades him to change, then asks Nelle if he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She says it’s actually a weird case of schizophrenia.

Larry has gone from Mr. Scrooge to Father Christmas. Ally arrives at his office to find it looking like Santa’s Village (if Santa were a lawyer in Boston). Decorations and lights are everywhere. Larry flips a switch and the office is illuminated by twinkle lights. He flips it again and Ally is illuminated under strategically placed mistletoe. As they kiss, the door swings open to reveal a beautiful woman. An angel? Hardly. It’s Larry’s ex, Jamie, who is also the mother of his son. Once Ally is over the shock of meeting her, she leaves them alone and heads to Renee’s office. Renee thinks Ally is crazy for leaving them alone. She should’ve “put that bitch on a plane back to Detroit.” There’s the holiday spirit!

Speaking of holiday spirit, Ling wants to sing with Richard at the party. It has more to do with the spotlight and the attention than with the actual singing. She’s sick of everyone else hogging the limelight. Mark asks Elaine to be his date for the festivities, but she wouldn’t want him to be embarrassed, what with her being promiscuous and all. Take that, Mark the pious!

Later, Larry tells Ally that he invited Jamie to the party since it’s her last night in town. Ally envisions chucking Larry out the window, but puts up a brave front and agrees. She later regrets it when Jamie shows up at her office. Jamie is a nosy nuisance – asking if Ally and Larry will get married and if they’re sleeping together. Ally immediately goes to Larry, questioning Jamie’s motives. Larry offers to uninvite Jamie to the party, but Ally says no. Smash cut to the party, where Jamie is driving Ally nuts with her cute anecdotes about when she and Larry were together. Everyone else is having a great time – even Ling and Fish, who surprise everyone with their lip-synching routine.

Nelle and Cage, however, are stuck in court where Henderson is not helping things with the choo-choo train he brought. Henderson’s doctor confirms that his disorder is temporary and probably caused by depression. Nelle is starting to think the whole mess has to do with their tenuous relationship. When Henderson takes the stand, he clarifies that he doesn’t make the toys or deliver them. He’s just a figurehead – a symbol of the Christmas spirit that gives people hope. He also amazes the court by knowing how many children the prosecutor and the judge have. How’d he know? John’s closing statements argue that Santa Claus exists just as faith and love exist – in our hearts. And today, Santa lives in the heart of Henderson Porter. To everyone’s surprise, the judge rules in Henderson’s favor. Nelle reaches out by asking her father to come and stay with her.

Back at the party, Ally ditches the Larry-Jamie reunion and goes to her office. Now that they’re alone, Jamie admits to Larry that she wants to reconcile. She knows that he still loves her – and he doesn’t deny it. Larry tracks down Ally and tells her that Jamie wants to become a family again. He might as well have pulled out a shotgun and blown the poor girl away. She remains stoic and that’s when Larry tells her that he is so totally in love with her that he could never go back to Jamie. (Wipe away those tears, girls!)
